Summary
Professional auditors must master many skills to be effective. Attention is usually focused on technical
and audit report issues. But what about auditor behavior and interaction skills, building trust, selling our
ideas, and driving change. For the audit project to succeed, there must exist (or the auditor must create) an
environment of mutual concern, respect and trust. While we all agree that sound technical skills are
necessary for auditor effectiveness, the mastery and daily application of communication and interpersonal
skills are just as important.

  • Understand role of forensic technology including digital forensics, e-discovery, and analytics.

About Andrea Higgins:
Andrea is a graduate of the University of Kentucky with a double major in Accounting and Management. After graduating, she spent two years in private accounting and four years in public accounting as a tax accountant. She has spent the last ten years in sales and business development, with seven of those years at Robert Half. She currently serves as the Division Director of the consulting division (management resources). In this role, she spends much of her time interviewing accounting and finance consultants as well as meeting and interacting with "C" level accounting and finance professionals to uncover project needs.


About Amy Russell:
Amy Russell is a graduate of the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting. After graduating, she spent 7 years in public accounting at KPMG ranging from Audit Associate to Senior Audit Manager. She currently serves as an Account Executive for Robert Half Management Resources, the senior consulting division of Robert Half. In this role, she has spent much of her time interviewing Accounting and Finance consultants, as well as assisting Accounting and Finance professionals with strategic project initiatives. Amy currently serves as the Event Chair for the annual fundraising event, Putt fore The Patch, benefitting the Cabbage Patch Settlement House.

About Julio Flores:
Julio Flores is a Director in PwC's Internal Audit practice in Indianapolis. He has over 15 years of experience in public accounting and private industry serving companies in a variety of industries including healthcare, insurance, retail, manufacturing, and financial services. Julio has significant experience in helping companies perform organization wide risk assessments and developing and executing internal audit plans. Julio also helped many companies with process improvement projects. Throughout his internal audit and consulting experience, he has used data analytics to enhance the sample selection process, automate testing procedures, and identify process improvement opportunities. Prior to joining PwC, Julio was a Director in KPMG's Los Angeles Advisory practice where he helped lead many of the firms healthcare consulting and risk management initiatives. Prior to KPMG, Julio was an underwriting manager for a property and casualty insurer. Julio obtained his B.S. in Accounting from California State University, Northridge. Julio is a Certified Internal Auditor and sits on various boards, including the national BOD for ALPFA (Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting) and the Indianapolis Urban League.


About Brian Long:
Brian Long is a Manager in PwC's Risk Assurance practice in Louisville. He has over 9 years of client service experience, serving in a variety of project management and consulting roles. He specializes in oversight of controls testing, SOX readiness, business process improvement and efficiency reviews. Brian regularly leads privacy engagements, including serving in the Privacy Officer role, as well as reviewing privacy and security controls within organizations. Brian is a frequent instructor of internal firm training, including the use of cloud computing in Windows and UNIX environments. He regularly speaks at industry events, including local chapters of the IIA, ISACA, PMI, and ISSA. Brian obtained his B.S. in Computer Science and his MBA from the University of Kentucky. Brian is a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor and Certified Information Systems Auditor.

The Future of Risk: Trends in Risk Management and Thinking Outside the SOX Box

This interactive session will focus on unlocking the value of Internal Audit and “flipping the triangle” to allow internal auditors to focus their efforts on the high-risk items while still meeting important compliance requirements with regulatory requirements such as SOX. This seminar will assist audience members in pursuing four actions that companies can take now to empower their SOX functions to create fundamental advantages in their sectors: automate controls, offshore for lower-cost resources, leverage IT investment (including GRC), and innovate strategically.

About Marc Schulman:
Marc Schulman is an Executive Director in the Advisory Services practice of Ernst & Young, responsible for the delivery of Advisory services to managed care organizations, health care providers and life sciences clients. He has over 25 years of health care-specific experience working directly for managed care organizations, hospitals and as an industry business advisor. Marc has led and managed multiple internal audit outsourcing and teaming engagements focusing on financial, operational, compliance and information technology risk issues. He regularly assists clients with risk convergence issues to align risk resources with organization objectives. His experience also includes performing enterprise risk management engagements, leading SOX and MAR projects and managing process and controls assessments within managed care organizations, as well as working with health care companies on a variety of financial, operational and risk issues. He previously served as the Global Internal Audit HealthCare leader, developing risk management methodologies for use throughout the firm. Marc holds an MPA in health care from Syracuse University and a BS Health Sciences Administration and Planning from SUNY College at Cortland.


About Tamil Chellaiah:
Tamil Chellaiah is a Manager in Ernst & Young’s Advisory Services practice with more than five years of experience within the private, academic and public sectors. She has a wide range of experience including process improvement, risk management/ compliance, internal audit, SOX 404 and Model Audit Rule (MAR). Tamil has examined clients’ operational procedures, financial and information systems and internal control environments to evaluate effectiveness, verify compliance with corporate policies/government regulations and strategic alignment. She currently oversees internal audit and risk management related projects at several Louisville area companies. Tamil is a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) who is also trained in lean concepts and project management techniques. She earned her MBA from the University of Maryland where she led the Robert H. Smith Healthcare Industry Group and serves as a member of the University’s Healthcare Business Association. Tamil is also a member of the DC Chamber of Commerce Next Generation of Leaders Program.

About Chris Noll:
Chris Noll is a safety and security professional with more than 20 years of experience. Currently, he leads the Environmental, Health & Safety function for Humana, which is a new department focused on supporting associate well-being of more than 40,000 associates through the management of safety, environmental, and emergency preparedness programs.

Prior to joining Humana, he led the Loss Prevention Department for InterContinental Hotels Group, focusing on the safety and security of guests and employees at more than 3,000 InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, and Holiday Inn hotels located throughout North America.

Chris holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Safety and Health from Grand Valley State University and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Tiffin University. He is a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and is board certified in security (CPP) by the American Society of Industrial Security. He also holds the Associate in Risk Management (ARM) designation from the Insurance Institute of America.

About Daryl Snyder:
As Greater Louisville Inc.’s Vice President for Economic Devleopment, Daryl Snyder works with companies and consultants in corporate site selection. He focuses on the knowledge-based economy, and has extensive experience working with auto suppliers, aviation and logistics-dependent operations. He coordinates site visits and serves as a liaison between his clients and key individuals in the public and private sectors, in both Louisville and in Frankfort.

Mr. Snyder holds his BS in Business & Economics from Georgetown College with a minor in Political Science.In 1997, he received the Landmarks of Excellence Award from the PRSA/IABC for the proposal to attract the headquarters of (formerly known as Tricon Global Restaurants) Yum! Brands, Inc.He graduated from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Institute for Organization Management at UCLA in June 1999. He is a 2003 graduate of Leadership Louisville and is a 2011 Bingham Fellow. He serves on the Board of Directors of the World Trade Center of Kentucky and the Louisville Regional Airport Authority Project Team.
